And now a little background on skateparks. The first skateparks were primarily private, for-profit endeavors, although several public parks were built globally. Parks then included pools, bowls, snake runs, freestyle areas, banked slalom areas, half-pipes, and full pipes. Most were concrete and were outdoors. In more extreme climates parks were built indoors, often of wood.

The modern public skatepark is relatively new, made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in skateboarders' injuries. Parks are usually for persons 14 or over.

The Tony Hawk Foundation is at the forefront of helping cities to get skateparks built. The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.

Skate Park Overview

Park Description

Sixth Avenue Skatepark 401 Sixth Avenue South Nashville, TN 37203 Information: 615.843.4006 Sixth Avenue Skatepark opened its doors January 6, 2003 in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. Built by Catalyst Ramp Company of Ventura, California, the indoor wood park features a unilateral design with tranny and tech riders in mind. The 11,000 sq. ft. of terrain includes 16’ vert wall, 10’ bank to vert corner, hips, ledges, rails, sub wall, sub rail, spine ramps and a 4’ to 5’ capsule bowl all surfaced with Skatelite. Unique to the scenario is that Sixth Avenue Skatepark operates as a non-profit organization, run by a board of directors. The organization originally started in the mid 1990’s as Rocketown, a youth centered music and dance venue. This model for structuring private skateparks eliminates the profit motive and allows riding to be simply about riding. There are no owners except those who come to ride, since proceeds roll over to maintain the facility. The park has received overwhelming responses from the Nashville community. The Tennessee Governor wrote the park to congratulate and thank Rocketown for building a youth driven facility. The Nashville Mayor provided assistance in facility upgrades. All local press has run multiple stories on the facility – The Tennessean, The Rage and The Scene, also local TV news has run park coverage. Alabama based BMX riders Corey Martinez and Seth Kimbro have been in regular attendance and Mike Vallely, Jesse Fritch and Stephan Atardo inaugurated the park with a mind blowing demo. Look out for more events coming sooner than you think.
