And now a little background on skateparks. The first skateparks were primarily private, for-profit endeavors, although several public parks were built globally. Parks then included pools, bowls, snake runs, freestyle areas, banked slalom areas, half-pipes, and full pipes. Most were concrete and were outdoors. In more extreme climates parks were built indoors, often of wood.
The modern public skatepark is relatively new, made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in skateboarders' injuries. Parks are usually for persons 14 or over.
The Tony Hawk Foundation is at the forefront of helping cities to get skateparks built. The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.

Park Description
The Extreme Sports Park is one of the nation’s best skate parks, with awesome features including a 24 foot full-pipe! The park offers a great balance of street-style, transition-style and vert.
The first phase of the project includes 40,000 square feet of outdoor concrete skating surface and a wooden vert ramp. A second phase will include a 20,000 square foot building with indoor skate areas, concessions, and restrooms. In addition to drawing extreme sports enthusiasts from across the country, the park will be an attractive venue for competitions and clinics.
Louisville Extreme Park provides skateboarding, rollerblading and biking opportunities to people of all ages and skill levels. Centrally located downtown near Waterfront Park and Slugger Field, the “X-park” will be accessible from all parts of the community by bus and car, or by self-powered means via the RiverWalk and the Beargrass Creek Bicycle Trail! The park’s design was based on the input of a local task force and the results of a public meeting attended by more than 100 likely Extreme Park users. Using clay, participants created models of design features they wanted to see in the park.
Also, the restrooms are complete!

anthemgirl - Let’s Show That Louisville School’s Should Be Allowed to Have Skateboard Clubs
And that Kentucky Has a Strong Skating Scene
My students at Eastern High School designed a Van’s shoe showing that the origins of skateboarding which is surfing. It shows bowls evolving into street skating. We were the 1st school in Kentucky to have a skate team. This year we were told we could not longer have a team. We would like to use this contest to show that skateboarding is a sport and should be allowed in schools.
Go to http://vans.com/customculture/vote.htlm and vote for their shoe. Voting will be from April 16, 2010 to April 18, 2010. Let’s show kids that their voice does matter. We are currently one of the top five in the southeast region out of 500 schools that entered.
Thanks,
Trish Hamilton-Cooper

midnight office - A huge park, not as street friendly, more bowl/ramp stuff. A full pipe seems more of a novelty that something that is actually fun to skate. However, BIG UPS to L-town for lighting it and letting it stay open 24/7. If you want to skate at 4 am you can, and you won't be alone. It does get crowded and with the lack of clear, natural lines, crashes are inevitable.
