And now a little background on skateparks. The first skateparks were primarily private, for-profit endeavors, although several public parks were built globally. Parks then included pools, bowls, snake runs, freestyle areas, banked slalom areas, half-pipes, and full pipes. Most were concrete and were outdoors. In more extreme climates parks were built indoors, often of wood.
The modern public skatepark is relatively new, made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in skateboarders' injuries. Parks are usually for persons 14 or over.
The Tony Hawk Foundation is at the forefront of helping cities to get skateparks built. The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.

The City opened its first skate park with a community celebration and ribbon cutting on Saturday, November 1st at aa the Castle Point Skate Park was officially opened to the public.
" With this opening, we are well on our way to tripling the amount of open space in our City, as well as providing a vital amenity for our many skate aficionados," said Mayor Roberts. "This park is a key element of that plan and serves our growing number of skaters."
Situated on the Hudson River with midtown Manhattan as the backdrop, Castle Point Skate Park has long been advocated by local skateboarders and inline skaters. It features nearly a dozen pieces of equipment and was designed by professional skaters Andy Kessler and Steve Rodriguez of the New York skateboarding firm 5boronyc.
The grand opening event featured an hour of performances by Kessler and Rodriguez, as well as one by Hoboken's Kelly Matthews, an X-Games silver medal winning inline street skater. Prizes were also given away.
The park's construction was funded through a $573,000 Green Acres Grant, obtained with the assistance of State Senator Bernard F. Kenny Jr. Joseph Hamilton Construction Corp and Hot Rails, Inc. constructed the park.
The opening comes about a month after the re-opening of the city's waterfront soccer field at nearby Sinatra Park which received a new surface. Another waterfront park, Pier C, is in the design phase.
