And now a little background on skateparks. The first skateparks were primarily private, for-profit endeavors, although several public parks were built globally. Parks then included pools, bowls, snake runs, freestyle areas, banked slalom areas, half-pipes, and full pipes. Most were concrete and were outdoors. In more extreme climates parks were built indoors, often of wood.
The modern public skatepark is relatively new, made possible by legislation such as California's 1998 law stating that skateboarding is an inherently "Hazardous Recreational Activity" (HRA), and therefore municipalities and their employees may not be held liable for claims of negligence resulting in skateboarders' injuries. Parks are usually for persons 14 or over.
The Tony Hawk Foundation is at the forefront of helping cities to get skateparks built. The Tony Hawk Foundation seeks to foster lasting improvements in society, with an emphasis on supporting and empowering youth. Through special events, grants, and technical assistance, the Foundation supports recreational programs with a focus on the creation of public skateboard parks in low-income communities. The Foundation favors programs that clearly demonstrate that funds received will produce tangible, ongoing, positive results.

Review: The Chino Skatepark has terrain for skateboarders of all styles from street to vert to pool rider. The Site Design group pulled through with a Killer design and once again California Skateparks did a great job of providing us with a smooth and fast skatepark. The skatepark is not perfect but to date the skatepark will most likely be considered the best overall skatepark that SoCal has to offer.
Features of the skatepark include a 3 leaf clover bowl with tile and pool coping, a 9' square bowl, a huge endless flow section with banks and bowls ranging from 4' to 7', and a decent banked street section. This is one of those skateparks you will want to skate again and again. The skatepark is layed out well and the lines are endless.
Bottom Line:
The Chino Skatepark is definately worth the road trip if you do not live in the area. If you have hit Fontana and liked that skatepark you will not be disappointed with the Chino Skatepark. My only complaints are that the diameter and depths of the Clover Pool should have been increased and that the upper section and the wicked waterfall that leads into the 9' sqare bowl were not designed as good as they could have been. Overall, the street kids and tranny bros should be way stoked on this one. -MH-
11/16/03 Note: The clover with most likely be closed for maintenance from 11/16 until they finish ripping out and re-setting the coping in the pool. The current coping set is way harsh and even many hardened pool raiders were pressed to even grind the pool.
